About Pilates joe_pilates_bent.jpg

Pilates was devised by Joseph Pilates, who was born in Germany in 1880 and died in 1967 in New York. As a child he had ricketts, rheumatic fever and asthma, so he devoted most of his life to achieving a fit healthy body and mind.

He took up bodybuilding, skiing and gymnastics, not to mention, dance and self defence, he also spent time training as a circus acrobat.

He put together the pilates method, drawing on things such as dance, circus skills, gymnastics, martial arts.

It was so effective he went from being a rather sickly child, to a very healthy adult, eventually becoming a male model, and posing for anatomical charts!

In 1914 he was training detectives at Scotland Yard in self defence. During World War One, he was interned, due to his nationality, on the Isle of Man. He used the time to train his fellow internees in his exercise method, and when the deadly Spanish 'flu broke out, not one of these internees died, and Joseph claimed it was a result of his fitness training.

In 1926 he and his wife, Clara, set up a studio in America.

The method became popular with actors, dancers, gymnasts and sports peoplejoe_pilates_head_and_shoulders.jpg, as news travelled of his success in treating injuries. Now, of course, people from all walks of life benefit from the Pilates method.

HOW IT WORKS :-

Take some time out for you, and learn, or improve, your Pilates technique.  It is a safe effective form of exercise, suitable for all levels of fitness, and for both men and women of all ages.

Pilates consists of slow, flowing, precise, movements which challenge all the muscles, but in particular the deep postural muscles – especially the pelvic floor and the deep abdominals - known as your “core stability", or "girdle of strength”. It builds up your natural girdle, which supports your back, and is therefore often recommended by physiotherapists, chiropractors and osteopaths.

The method balances your body – releasing tight muscles and strengthening weak ones.

It is safe, progressive, and is tailored to your abilities and needs.

You don’t need special clothing or footwear, just something comfortable, and bare feet or socks. dsc_2029.jpg_correction.jpg
